Derek Jeter begins career, the Rays don’t exist

On May 29, 1995, the beginning of Derek Jeter’s MLB career, the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays weren’t even on the field; they weren’t a team yet. On April 17, the Devil Rays and the City of St. Petersburg agreed on a 30-year lease for the team to play their home games at the ThunderDome. In fact, they didn’t sign their first player, righty pitcher Adam Sisk, until September 26. They played their first season in 1996.
